The Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy (DMMM), also known as Mercy Sisters, is one of the numerous congregations of women religious order all over the world.
Nature of the Congregation
Our congregation was founded in1961by the Late Bishop Anthony Nwedo, CSSp., (1912 – 2000). On June 17, 1993, Pope John Paul II recognized the congregation as an Institute of Pontifical Right. The DMMM is an institute of apostolic religious life, whose members take the three public vows of Obedience, Poverty and Chastity. The DMMM sisters’ main assignment is to proclaim Christ to all they come in contact with, either by words, by deeds or both.
The Purpose or Goals of the Congregation
The general goal of this congregation is to work for the Glory of God, the honor of Ever Blessed Virgin Mary, the holiness of its members, and for the salvation of souls, by the observance of the three evangelical counsels: Poverty, Chastity and Obedience.
The Specific Goals of Our Congregation
The DMMM sisters live a life of prayer and penance, making their lives a sign of God’s Love for a sinful world and an eloquent sermon to all around. The sisters care for the poor and needy in hospitals, orphanages and homes, teach in schools, and work in parishes, thereby preparing God’s faithful for the various sacraments, as well as playing the role of spiritual directors to pious societies in the parishes.
The Spirit of The Congregation i.e. the Intent of the Founder
The spirit of our congregation is that of charity, humility, prayerfulness, penance, and abandonment to the will of God. Our motto or mission statement is: Evangelizare Pauperibus Mist Me. “He sent me to bring the good news to the poor”.
The Charism of The Congregation
The charism of the DMMM Congregation is to bear witness to the mercy of God, by following the footsteps of Christ, the merciful savior and Mary our Mother of Mercy. This Mercy is expressed as compassion, forgiveness, and kindness. We undertake the apostolate of loving and caring for the underprivileged, the spiritually, intellectually and physically poor, by working in hospitals and homes, as well as teaching in schools.
The sisters also carry out their work of evangelization through agricultural farming to feed the poor, and by teaching the very poor living in rural areas the modern techniques of farming. The sisters take care of handicapped children and motherless babies in orphanages. Abandoned children under our care are provided with means of livelihood to live on their own. Some of these children have ended up as religious women and priests, while others embrace other works of life.
In summary as Mercy sisters, we take Jesus to the poor people of God, especially the sick, the aged, the orphans and the underprivileged and spiritually improvised. Our participation in education is simply to bring Jesus, the Light of the world to spiritually, morally and intellectually poor.
As we are honored with the title of Daughters of Mary Mother of Mercy, we seek assistance of this wonderful patroness, and entreat her to help us to be humble, compassionate and kind like herself. |
